UT SYSTEM’S REGENTS’ RESEARCH EXCELLENCE PROGRAM BOOSTS TRAUMA RESEARCH ACROSS TEXAS

SAN ANTONIO, TX, October 31, 2024 – The University of Texas System (UT System) recently approved the creation of the Regents’ Research Excellence Program, a $55 million initiative designed to elevate the research capabilities of its four Emerging Research Universities (ERUs): UT Dallas, UT Arlington, UT El Paso, and UT San Antonio (UTSA).

This significant investment will enable these universities to recruit top-tier faculty, fostering innovation and accelerating breakthroughs in critical fields like trauma care. The program will strengthen the ERUs’ research infrastructure, expand their national and international impact, and ultimately contribute to the economic prosperity of Texas.

“The Regents’ Research Excellence Program is a game-changer for UTSA and the field of trauma research,” said Dr. Jenny Hsieh, professor and department chair of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology in UTSA’s College of Sciences. “This significant investment will allow us to attract world-class researchers – fostering innovation and accelerating the translation of groundbreaking discoveries into life-saving treatments.”

The Trauma Research and Combat Casualty Care Collaborative (TRC4), a UT System-led initiative based at UT Health San Antonio, is poised to strategically support the recruitment of experts in trauma care. The TRC4 aims to foster transdisciplinary collaboration and make a substantial impact on both civilian and military trauma care. TRC4’s mission is to harness the power of the UT System to transform trauma care by funding transformative inter-institutional collaborative basic, clinical, and translational research. This research will be rapidly translated to improve trauma care throughout the state of Texas, and ultimately nationally and internationally.

Through the Regents’ Research Excellence Program, the ERUs will be able to recruit approximately 40 new faculty positions for mid- to senior-level researchers. These new hires will bring essential expertise to enhance competitiveness, address societal needs, and advance the universities’ ability to meet the goals set forth by the UT System and the Texas Legislature.
